The Andrews Labor Government is supporting community, arts and local history organisations to capture Victoria’s diverse history, making it available for more people to discover and enjoy.
Minister for Government Services Danny Pearson today announced the 40 projects that will share in $350,000 as part of the Local History Grants program run by Public Record Office Victoria to support community and history organisations to preserve, record and share Victoria’s local history.
Nagambie Historical Society will receive $11,250 funding to upgrade the Nagambie Museum, with Mr Pearson delivering the good news in person in the Goulburn Valley this morning.
The works will include the installation of modern display cases and furnishings to better preserve and display items and help to ensure the future of the museum and its important role in the community.
Other successful grant recipients include ILBIJERRI Theatre Company for their Bold, Black and Brilliant project which will archive their 30-year history and develop a body of primary sources on the history of blackfella performing arts.
The unique experiences of Victoria’s queer community will be captured by the Australian Queer Archives Inc through the digitisation of social health press clippings relating to sex and sexuality from the 1970s to the 1990s.
Central Highlands Broadcasting Inc is receiving support to interview pioneers of women’s football in Victoria on the establishment and growth of the Victorian Women’s Football League across its 30-year history.
A number of historical sites across Victoria also received funding to install interpretative signage, including the Fire Services Museum in East Melbourne, the Chiltern Athenaeum Museum, Golden Square Pool, Gunbower Heritage River Trail, the Queenscliff Maritime Museum, Sandy Point Community Group and the Mornington Lifesaving Club.
Other successful projects will help Victoria’s history reach more people in the community through e-books, videos, translations and oral histories.
